- Sandhill cranes migrate in flocks of tens of thousands, creating swirling ribbons in the sky.
- Arctic terns complete the longest migration of any animal — 25,000 miles round-trip.
- Ospreys, like Hendrix and Ryder in my middle grade novel Soar, often travel 3,000–4,000 miles from New England to South America. And since their parents abandon them after they learn to fly, they have to find their way there all on their own.

Ten ways to bring migration alive for students

Start with observation
Grades 3–5, about 10 to 15 minutes
Ask students what birds they've seen recently. Are they seeing flocks? Hearing new calls? Noticing changes? Even simple observations build scientific thinking. - 2
Explore BirdCast together
Grades 3–5, about 20 minutes
Show students BirdCast's live migration maps. Let them see the glowing colors representing millions of birds overhead. Ask: "Why do birds migrate at night?" "What patterns do you notice?" - 3
Map the flyways
Grades 3–4, about 25 minutes
Introduce the four major North American flyways: Atlantic, Mississippi, Central, and Pacific. Have students identify which flyway their region belongs to and trace how birds move through it. - 4
Create a migration map activity
Grades 3–5, one class period
Give students a blank map of North and South America, like the one in the Osprey Migration Geography Activity in my teacher resources. Have them draw the path of an osprey's journey, including stopover points, weather challenges, and hazards like storms or habitat loss. An answer key and teacher guide come with it. - 5
Pair fiction with nonfiction
Grades 3–5, a four to six week novel study
Read Soar: The Incredible Journey of Hendrix and Ryder to help students emotionally connect with the science, then pair it with nonfiction about raptors or migration. This builds science literacy and background knowledge.
Most classrooms spend four to six weeks with the book, which is enough room to fold in the rest of this list. The Chapter-by-Chapter Study Questions carry the reading, with comprehension, inference, science connection, SEL reflection, and vocabulary questions for each chapter. Around the time the brothers start south, hand out the migration map from activity 3. Start eBird observations early so students have their own data by the end. And once students know Hendrix and Ryder, the tracked birds in activity ten stop being dots on a map.

Integrate SEL
Grades 3–5, about 20 minutes
Discuss perseverance. Migration requires endurance, problem-solving, and adaptability, the same skills students need in their own lives. Ask: "What challenges do birds face? What challenges do we face? How do we keep going?" - 7
Connect to ecosystems
Grades 3–4, about 30 minutes
Show how birds depend on different ecosystems along their route: marshes, forests, rivers, coastlines. This reinforces food chains, habitats, and interdependence. - 8
Bring in geography
Grades 4–5, about 40 minutes
Have students calculate distances, compare routes, or research the countries birds pass through. Migration is a natural bridge between science and social studies. - 9
Participate in the eBird network
Grades 3–5, 30 minutes to start, then ongoing
eBird, run by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, is one of the world's largest biodiversity databases. Classrooms can contribute to it. Students can record bird sightings around the schoolyard or neighborhood and upload them to eBird. Their observations become part of a global scientific dataset used by researchers, conservationists, and migration forecasters. This activity teaches data literacy, observation skills, and real-world science participation. - 10
Follow the route of a real osprey
Grades 4–5, about 30 minutes
For twenty years, researcher Rob Bierregaard fitted ospreys across New England and the mid-Atlantic with satellite and cell-tower transmitters, and the resulting maps are still public at OspreyTrax. Each bird has a name and a page: Bridget, tagged as a fledgling in New Hampshire, working her way down the Connecticut River; Snowy, who crossed to Cuba in eight days; Tilton, who stalled out at Cape May before committing to the trip. Students can trace an individual bird's route, see where it stopped to fish, and find out whether it made the Caribbean crossing.
These are archived tracks rather than live ones — the tagging program ended in 2018 — but that is part of what makes them usable. The journeys are complete, so students can follow a bird from departure to arrival instead of waiting on a signal. The juvenile birds are especially worth following, because they made the trip alone, exactly as Hendrix and Ryder do.
